Virus-related hospitalizations have fallen to a two-month low after peaking in late November.
On Nov. 30, the Indiana Department of Health reported 3,460 Hoosiers hospitalized due to COVID-19, but the number has fluctuated and fallen since to 2,515 hospitalizations as of Tuesday. This is Indiana’s least number of COVID-19 hospitalizations since Nov. 9. The state’s average number of daily deaths has also fallen since mid-December.
The IDOH reported Tuesday 3,191 new positive cases and 88 new deaths that occurred between Dec. 31 and Jan. 11. Indiana now averages between 50 to 60 virus-related deaths every day compared to 86 deaths four weeks ago. The state has recorded 570,477 cases and 8,731 deaths since the pandemic began.

COVID-19 patients occupy more than a quarter of Indiana ICU beds with 26.3% of beds still available. According to the IDOH, Indiana has administered more than 6.1 million tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 15.9%.
In Monroe County, the IDOH documented 49 new cases, increasing the county total to 8,810. The county death toll remained at 102. Monroe County has tested 73,672 residents with an overall seven-day positivity rate of 6.9%.
Patients with COVID-19 currently occupy 22.1% of ICU beds available for Monroe County residents, but unlike the state, more than 56% of ICU beds remain available. Virus-related hospitalizations in the area have fallen from their peak of 167 on Dec. 12 to 122 as of Jan. 11.
