The City of Bloomington’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration is tonight.
This year it will be online because of COVID-19.
The virtual event begins at 7 p.m. and features keynoter Dr. Khalid el Hakim, the founder of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, performances by the Indiana University African American Choral Ensemble and an awards ceremony for community members who’ve contributed to areas of race relations, justice and human rights.
The Black History 101 Mobile Museum has visited 40 states with over 10,000 artifacts of Black memorabilia spanning from the trans-Atlantic slave trade era to hip-hop culture, according to the museum’s website.

Dr. el-Hakim has received national and international attention for his work exhibiting black history. In 2013, he published The Center of the Movement: Collecting Hip Hop Memorabilia.
Previously, he taught middle school social studies in Detroit for 15 years and recently founded the Michigan Hip Hop Archive. He received his PH.D. at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana.
