Indiana Breaks The 9,000-Death Threshold

COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase with 1,138 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus.
COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase with 1,138 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus.

Indiana crossed the 9,000-death mark Tuesday after the Indiana Department of Health reported more than 100 new COVID-19 deaths for the first time in two weeks.

The IDOH reported 126 new deaths and 2,756 new cases, increasing the state total to 9,092 deaths and 595,436 cases. The newly reported deaths occurred between Dec. 15 and Jan. 18 and are dispersed enough that Indiana’s average daily death count continues to decrease despite today’s large, reported death toll. As of now, Indiana averages about 40 COVID-19 deaths every day.

The state seven-day positivity rate continues to fall. The state has administered nearly 6.5 million tests on more than 2.8 million Hoosiers with a positivity rate of 11.9%. Indiana hasn’t had a positivity rate this low since early November.

Indiana’s COVID-19 hospital census shows 2,332 Hoosiers hospitalized due to COVID-19 —the lowest number of hospitalizations reported since early November as well. Nearly 30% of ICU beds remain available with 24.4% occupied by COVID-19 patients.

Nearly 72,000 Hoosiers have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, while more than 317,000 people in Indiana have received at least one dose.

In Monroe County, the IDOH reported 79 new cases, increasing the county total to 9,189 cases. The death toll remained at 108.

The county has administered 250,249 tests on 75,234 residents with a 4.9% seven-day positivity rate.

According to IDOH, there are 97 COVID-19 patients in surrounding hospitals, but 60.6% of ICU beds remain available.
