Indiana has crossed another COVID-19 milestone, even as numbers trend downward.
The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) reported Thursday 3,733 new cases, pushing the state beyond the 600,000-case mark. According to the IDOH, 601,937 Hoosiers have tested positive and, with 64 newly reported cases, the virus has killed 9,218 Indiana residents.
Despite crossing this threshold, state data show a decline during January in cases, deaths, hospitalizations and positivity rates.
Indiana has administered more than 6.6 million tests on more than 2.8 million Hoosiers with a seven-day positivity rate of 10.8% — the lowest rate since Nov. 1.

COVID-19 hospitalizations across the state rose by only one to 2,303 which is still one of the lowest totals since early November. Patients hospitalized due to the virus occupy 24% of ICU beds, while 27% of beds remain available. Nearly three-quarters of Indiana’s ventilators are still available.
In Monroe County, the IDOH reported another 78 positive cases and one new death, increasing the county totals to 9,299 cases and 110 deaths. Monroe County has administered more than 254,000 tests on more than 75,000 residents with a seven-day positivity rate of 4.1%. That is the lowest positivity rate in the state.
Nearly 63% of ICU beds available to Monroe County residents remain available. The District 8 COVID-19 hospital census shows 88 people in the area hospitalized due to the virus.
