Local health officials are prepared to keep vaccinating the community through inclement weather.
“We have plans in place if we need to move a clinic from one day to another,” said Penny Caudill, county health administrator.
Caudill said this week’s snowfall had little impact on vaccine appointments and she expects the same results throughout the rest of the winter.
“We actually did not see many cancellations. We saw exactly the number of people that we were expecting this week,” said Caudill.
Any changes to vaccine clinics or appointments will be made on the county’s Facebook page or by calling individuals directly.
“As long as we have enough advance notice, they would get a text message from the scheduling platform,” said Caudill. “If we don’t have that, we will have our staff start to call people.”
IU Health said it also will monitor the forecast and provide updates on social media.
During Friday’s local weekly COVID-19 press conference, IU Health South Central region’s community relations director Shawna Girgis shared recent hospital data.
Girgis said more than 22,000 people have been vaccinated so far at the Bloomington Hospital site and the region’s ICU occupancy is 28%. She also reported that local COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since early October.
“These numbers are incredibly encouraging, and we hope to continue to see a decline in our numbers as vaccines become available,” Girgis said.
Indiana’s eligibility for a vaccine remains open for Hoosiers 65 years and older.
