COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase with 1,138 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus.

The Indiana Department of Health reported Monday only 817 new positive cases — the lowest number recorded in nearly five months.

Indiana’s newly reported cases along with 19 new deaths, increase the state totals to 649,652 cases and 11,765 deaths. Monday is the first time since early October the state health department recorded fewer than 1,000 new cases in a single day. At this point, Indiana averages between 1,300 and 1,600 cases and fewer than 30 deaths every day.

The state reported fewer tests than typical with an additional 16,180 new tests. Indiana has administered more than 7.57 million tests on more than 3.05 million Hoosiers. Indiana currently has a seven-day positivity rate of 5.3% which is the lowest rate recorded since Sept. 29.

Hospitalizations across the state rose slightly over the weekend to 1,066. COVID-19 patients occupy 9.2% of Indiana ICU beds, with nearly 40% of beds remaining available. Only 3.7% of ventilators are in use by COVID-19 patients.

More than 816,700 Hoosiers have received their first dose of the vaccine, and 336,827 residents — about 5% of Indiana’s population — have been fully vaccinated.
