SCOTUS Denies Petition In Jill Behrman Murder Case

John Myers was found guilty of the murder of IU student and Bloomington native Jill Behrman in 2006.
John Myers was found guilty of the murder of IU student and Bloomington native Jill Behrman in 2006.

The man convicted of killing Bloomington resident and Indiana University student Jill Behrman will remain in prison following a ruling by the United States Supreme Court.

The court denied John Myers' petition for writ of certirari after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld Myers' conviction in an August 2020 ruling.

In 2006, Myers was convicted of murder in connection with Behrman's death and sentenced to 65 years.

Last year, a U.S. District court ordered a new trial for Myers, ruling he had received inadequate representation from his attorneys. The seventh circuit Court of Appeals' August 2020 ruling reversed that decision.

SCOTUS' denial of Myers' petition for writ of certirari means he will remain imprisoned at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City until his release, which could be as early as June 2037.

Behrman grew up in Bloomington. She was 19 when she disappeared on a bike ride in May of 2000. Police later identified several suspects and drained Salt Creek in Monroe County after one of the suspects confessed.

But no body was found there and no one was charged at that time.

In 2003, Behrman's remains were found far from Salt Creek a wooded area off of Warthan Road in Morgan County. And in March 2006, a grand jury convened in Morgan County to look into the case.

In April of that year, Myers was charged with the murder. He had not been one of the earlier suspects. Investigators concluded that Myers killed her out of anger over a failed relationship with a girlfriend.

Sara Wittmeyer and Bob Zaltsberg contributed to this story.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Jill Behrman's remains were found in a field. Her remains were found in a wooded area off of Warthan Road near Paragon, Indiana.
