A group of senate republicans released an outline of their counteroffer to President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion jobs and infrastructure plan.
Republican lawmakers criticized Biden’s plan for taking a broad approach to what’s considered infrastructure.
Bill Rodgers III is a chief economist in the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University and served on President Obama’s transition team. He says infrastructure in the 21st century economy looks different than it did 30 years ago citing manufacturing jobs have decreased while the service industry is on the rise.
“We live in a very different economy so what infrastructure used to be; building a highway, building a bridge, yes that’s still infrastructure but we now have these service based type of activities.”
The republican senate groups’ counteroffer to Biden’s plan would cost $569 billion and doesn’t include funds or policies that address care for elderly or disabled, which Biden’s plan does.
Rodgers says another difference that has be taken into account is that women now make up a little more than half the workforce and men are more involved in unpaid work at home.
