Indiana University’s Janet McCabe will officially become the deputy administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The U.S. Senate confirmed her appointment to the second highest position at the agency on Tuesday by a vote of 52-42.
McCabe is the director of IU’s Environmental Resilience Institute — which works to help communities adapt to climate change. She’s also a professor at the IUPUI McKinney School of Law.
In a press release from IU, McCabe said the challenges Indiana farmers, businesses, and communities face due to climate change are being felt across the country. She also said she aims to take lessons learned from building a bipartisan coalition through the Resilience Institute to the position.

McCabe is not new to the EPA. She worked in the agency’s Office of Air and Radiation for more than seven years and helped develop the Clean Power Plan under the Obama administration — which aimed to reduce pollution from power plants around the country.
