Bloomington Police responded to a crash at the intersection of Hillside Drive and South Walnut Sunday afternoon that involved a U-Haul truck driving into a tattoo shop.
"Upon arrival, officers located the U-Haul completely inside the business, Evil by the Needle, and it was apparent that the truck had been southbound on Walnut Street and had veered off the road and driven through the north wall of the building," Capt. Ryan Pedigo said in an email.
The driver of the U-Haul was a 77-year-old Bloomington man, who was trapped inside the truck due to a large amount of debris that was piled up next to the truck.
"The man was able to be removed from the truck and was assisted out of the building to be treated by ambulance personnel,” Pedigo said. "The driver said he had fallen asleep while driving southbound on Walnut Street, causing the truck to veer off the road and into the building."
Police found two women inside the building at the time of the crash with non-life-threatening injuries.
Pedigo said officers did not observe any signs of impairment. A blood sample was drawn from the driver per an Indiana statute that requires one to be collected after a vehicle crash resulting in a bodily injury.
"There were no citations issued," Pedigo said.
Beverly Deckard is one of the owners of the building that houses Evil by the Needle. She said it will likely take more than a month to repair the brick façade and other structural damages.
