Monroe County Commissioners issued a disaster declaration in the wake of damage caused by last weekend's storms.
“The basic function of declaring the emergency is to alert the state and the federal government that, hey, we had a big storm and we had some problems and we would like to get some funding if it’s available,” County Attorney Jeff Cockrill said.
Individuals who don’t have flood insurance are asked to call 211 or log onto in211.org and fill out a storm assessment form.
Businesses can also report damage on the 211 website.

“It’s really challenging, because it’s geared toward individuals, but the business information is also collected there, so when it asks for the name of the individual, that’s the name of the business,” Monroe County Emergency Management Director Allison Moore said.
The county must meet a minimum threshold of 25 businesses that have at least 40 percent of their assessed value damaged in the storm in order to qualify for federal loans.
Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security is doing its own assessment of damage caused by the storms in affected counties statewide.
