MCCSC Bus Crashes Thursday Injuring 4 Inside – One Child LifeLined To Riley

A Monroe County Community School Corp. bus crashed Thursday morning. Three students and the driver were hurt.

Deputies responded to the crash on the 7800 block of East Northshore Drive near Lake Lemon at 8:22 a.m. A statement from the sheriff’s department said the school bus ran off the road and struck a tree. It was the only vehicle involved.

Three children were on the bus - ages 7, 9, and 12 years old. Two were sons of the driver, according to a statement from MCCSC.

One of the children was seriously injured and was transported by Lifeline helicopter to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis.

A statement from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said the bus driver and the other two children suffered minor injuries. The sheriff’s office says accident reconstructionists are investigating.

A statement from MCCSC said corporation officials immediately contacted first responders after being notified of the crash. The statement said families of those on board were notified.

In the statement, MCCSC’s superintendent, Jeff Hauswald thanked first responders and MCCSC staff “for their immediate and professional response to this terrible accident.”

The statement said social workers and other health professionals are available for affected families, students, and staff members who want to speak about the accident.

MCCSC said the driver is a trained driver on their staff. The corporation has acknowledged it faced a shortage of drivers, which has delayed some routes this month
