Quinn Buckner was elected the chair of the Indiana University Board of Trustees at the board’s organizational meeting last week.
Buckner, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, is the first Black to be elected to chair the board.
He was first elected to the board of trustees in 2010. Buckner will serve as board chair for the next two years and preside over all trustee meetings, identify responsibilities of board members and fill committee vacancies.
"I am most familiar with the dynamics of a team," Buckner told the trustees. "We're all better when we do what we're responsible for. So let's all work together to ensure IU's success."
Buckner was a member of IU’s 1976 national championship men’s basketball team and captained the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. He played 10 years in the NBA, winning a title with the Boston Celtics in 1984 and was the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks from 1993-94.
Buckner earned a bachelor’s degree in business at IU. He is currently the vice president of communications for Pacers Sports and Entertainment and a longtime TV basketball analyst.
MaryEllen Kiley Bishop was elected the board’s vice chair.
"I am grateful to have two such longtime stewards of Indiana University leading the board," IU President Pamela Whitten said. "Their election to these roles reflects their experience and dedication to this university, and it is an honor to work with them to shape the future of the university."
The nine-member board is composed of three trustees elected by IU alumni and six trustees appointed by the governor.
