Bloomington Transit Removes Bus Stop Along Seventh Street

Bloomington Transit announced it is permanently removing a bus stop because of 7-Line bike lane construction.

Last month, BT tweeted it is removing the eastbound stop at the intersection of Seventh Street and Fess Avenue since it falls directly in the new bike lane.

“Obviously we couldn’t continue the stop being there, but it’s not that far from the IMU stop,” said BT general manager Lew May.

Nearby bus stops along Seventh Street at Dunn Street and Wooodlawn Avenue are still available.

Additionally, IU campus buses tweeted on Sept. 2 that services on Seventh Street were unavailable due to a semi-truck parked on the road. May said he is unaware if BT was impacted.

“I’m not aware of any major traffic delays resulting from semis or others, but if campus buses experience it, chances are we are too,” he said.

May said his biggest concern regarding the bike lane is the width of the traffic lanes on Seventh Street. Each lane is still 10 feet wide, which is the same width as before. However, the new lanes are bordered by curbs instead of parking spaces.

“So, it does require our drivers operate slower in the corridor,” May said. “Sometimes when they have oncoming traffic, especially if it is a large vehicle like a bus or a truck, they may have to come to a complete stop to allow the other vehicle to pass.”
