Kirkwood to reopen to cars at end of October

Kirkwood Avenue will reopen to cars at the end of October, after parts of the street were closed to vehicles in March for outdoor dining.

Mary Catherine Carmichael is the director of public engagement for the City of Bloomington. She said the city spoke with businesses on Kirkwood and decided this would be the right course of action, given that once it gets cold most people don’t use these outdoor spaces.

The parklet program, which closed off parking spaces downtown for outdoor eating, and pick-up drop off spaces will end as well.

Carmichael said the city will look at whether to reimplement these programs again when the weather warms up.

Two proposals about modifications to Kirkwood and the parklet program are in the works right now, and are expected to go to city council before the end of the year.
