City of Bloomington removes curb on Seventh Street to accommodate buses

The City of Bloomington has removed almost 10 feet of the new bike lane curb east of the Indiana Avenue and Seventh Street intersection.

In an email, city engineer Andrew Cibor said the change to the 7-Line protected bike lane is based on observations and discussions with Bloomington Transit and IU Campus Bus staff leadership.

“The change is being made to improve the ability for northbound transit vehicles on Indiana Avenue to turn right onto Seventh Street,” Cibor said.

Cibor added that he did not know a detailed cost breakdown of the repair.

BT bus operator and AFSCME Local 613 president Jeff Cisneros said removing the curb will not solve the problem.

“Even now, with part of the median taken out, we still, whenever we make our righthand turn, the nose of the bus is going to come over into the west-bound travel lane,” Cisneros said.

He said cars would need to stop at least half a bus length before the stop sign to make enough room for commercial vehicles.

“But we still have the problem of lane widths that are barely legal by the technical measures of the law,” Cisneros said.

Cisneros said he intends to talk with BT management about his concerns along the corridor.
