Bloomington city workers are adjusting traffic flow on Third Street in front of Ami restaurant and the Jacob’s School of Music.

The city removed about 200 feet of the left-hand lane on Third Street where it changes from a one-way to a two-way road at Mitchell Street.

City engineer Andrew Cibor says that area confuses drivers who turn onto Swain Avenue from the Third Street right-hand lane. As a result, the intersection of Swain and Third is one of the most common crash locations in the county.

“We’re essentially making the traffic on Mitchell yield or stop to traffic on third street, and enter a single lane as opposed to a free-flowing lane,” he said.

Cibor said the city added a yield sign on Mitchell Street but is still considering adding a stop sign.

“We are actively monitoring this intersection and how it’s operating,” he said. “We may be making some tweaks, but generally I don’t expect this to go away.”
