After rise in sexual assault reports, IU PHA and IFC suspend some social events

The IU Panhellenic Association and IU Fraternity Council are suspending some events for the rest of fall semester.

According to an email to Greek members, the suspension stems from to increased reports of sexual violence within the community. These include events reported via IU Bloomington’s Crime Notifications on Sept. 6, and another reported at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity on Oct. 31.

The email said individual chapters will not be allowed to pair for events on or off campus. Social events open to the public will not be allowed.

Date parties registered on or before Nov. 3, Parents’ Weekend as well as brother and sisterhood events are still allowed to take place.

Judicial boards with the PHA and IFC councils will make final decisions over what classifies as a violation.

Chapters in violation will be fined up to $2,000, the email said.

IU chapters with IFC and PHA will review Risk Management policies, followed by workshops covering the polices.

The email said IFC chapters are required to schedule a session of IFC’s It’s On Us: Sexual Assault Education Training.

PHA leadership encourages, but does not require, its chapters to participate in Sexual Assault Awareness training, focused on supporting survivors of sexual violence.

In response to request for an interview, an IU spokesperson sent this statement:

“We applaud the Panhellenic Association and IFC for taking steps to address concerns raised within their community and recognize the importance of student leaders stepping up to create change in their community.  We have been working closely with our student leaders to help them identify ways to create safer social events and environments, and on developing their prevention and educational initiatives.  This decision was made by the student leaders in this community.  We will support them as they work to take steps to self-govern their organizations and community.

Any students impacted by sexual violence can contact a Confidential Victim Advocate for confidential support and assistance, including their options for reporting the incident to the university or police.”
