Monroe Co. reports 100 new COVID-19 cases, state total passes 1.2 million

Monroe County confirmed 100 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, up from 41 on Tuesday.

The 7-day positivity rate is 7.6 percent, down from 7.8 percent Tuesday.

One new death was added to the county total, bringing it to 227 since the pandemic began. This month, seven COVID-19 deaths have been confirmed in the county.

The county remained in the orange advisory level. Its weekly cases per 100,000 were down from 279 last week to 211 this week. This number is updated on Wednesdays.

In District 8, which includes Monroe, Brown, and Bartholomew counties, hospitalizations increased to 132 Tuesday from 131 Tuesday. Last week, the average number of hospitalizations in the district was 143.

Although COVID continues to spread, IU chief health officer Dr. Aaron Carroll says it could still be safe to travel for the holidays.

“If you’re driving somewhere to spend time with a small number of family, all of whom have been relatively careful, that’s very safe,” Carroll said. “If you’re getting on a plane and flying to go hang out at a massive indoor concert, probably not very safe.”

“The biggest and best thing we can all do is be as vaccinated as possible,” he said.

Statewide

The state confirmed 4,813 cases Wednesday, bringing the pandemic total to 1,200,926.

The Indiana Department of Health confirmed 86 new COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, raising the total since the pandemic began to 18,057.

Hospitalizations decreased to 2,940 Wednesday from 3,002 Tuesday. The state’s positivity rate is 13.4 percent.
