The City of Bloomington will raise its water rates starting in February 2022, according to a release from the city.

The Indiana Utilities Regulatory commission approved the plan to up rates on Dec. 22.

The new rate will be implemented in phases, according to the city. Water Works revenue will increase by 8.4 percent in 2022 and 9.1 percent in 2024.

A customer with a 5/8 inch meter will see their bill go up by $1.09 in 2022 if they use 3,000 gallons a month. Because meter size and water use vary, bill changes will vary depending on those factors.

This is the first rate increase in five years. The city said it will allow for improvements in service like filtration and emergency power generation.

Also, City of Bloomington Utilities found in a 2020 study that residential customers typically pay more than their cost of service, while all other customers pay less. The city says the rate increase will more accurately reflect cost of service for different customer categories, and the raised rates will be smaller for residents than other customers.
