Indiana COVID-19 hospitalizations highest since 2020

The Department of Health reports more than 470,500 Hoosiers have been tested for the virus, and 9.5% have tested positive.
The Department of Health reports more than 470,500 Hoosiers have been tested for the virus, and 9.5% have tested positive.

Indiana reported an additional 4,091 cases of COVID-19 after the long holiday weekend.

Reporting delays and closed labs are frequent over holiday weekends, but the state’s hospital census offers more troubling news.

Currently there are 3,164 Hoosiers hospitalized with COVID-19, which surpassed any number achieved last year.

That leaves the state’s hospitals with fewer than 11 percent of ICU beds available, but officials warn finding workers to staff hospitals remain a challenge.

The 7-day positivity rate surged to 18.2 percent, and is expected to continue climbing in the coming days.  That’s one of the highest rates the state has ever logged, and the highest since April 2020 when tests were in extremely short supply.
