Judge refuses to release man accused of jail murder plot

A Monroe County court on Thursday declined to release a young man accused of plotting to kill a long list of people from behind bars.

Dongwook Ko, 19, appeared briefly before Judge Valeri Haughton, who explained that she was not going to release him before a hearing next week.

Ko, dressed in a black-and-white striped jail uniform, responded that he understood the decision before being escorted out of the room.

Prosecutors noted that Ko had holds preventing his release in Clay County as well as one from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Ko, a South Korean resident, is accused of providing a hit list and map to a cellmate at a jail in Brazil, Indiana. He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder in December.

Last year Ko pleaded guilty to several charges related to an attack on a girl at a violin camp being held at Indiana University. He was sentenced to eight years of home detention but U.S. agents swiftly jailed him ahead of deportation.

However, the new charges mean he’ll remain in Indiana at least until trial.
