Increased local cases cause strains on testing sites

Local officials are encouraging people to remain cautious after a rough week with COVID-19. The county reentered the red advisory on the state dashboard, and the city reported the most city employees to test positive for the virus since the pandemic began.

Monroe County’s Health Administrator Penny Caudill said with the rise in local cases and testing, people should expect delays in getting results.

She said the health department’s gravity testing site on North Curry Pike had to close early, around 2 p.m., a couple times this week.

"Just because of volume," she said. "That by 2 o'clock they had to stop the line so that they could make sure they saw all of those people who were already in line."

Last week, the county recorded more than 400 cases per 100,000 residents. That jumped up to more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 this week. Caudill adds that Monroe County residents needing a test or vaccine quickly can look at surrounding counties for services.

“Not every clinic, not every county is experiencing the high demands for testing and vaccine that we are.”

Caudill said the county’s moving average of cases is more than 300, the most it’s ever been.
