A former Cummins, Inc., employee has been sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for defrauding the company of nearly $5 million.

David Hudson of Columbus, Ohio,  pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in 2020 after he was caught using his position to steal over $4.8 million over the course of nine years. He was sentenced earlier this month in federal court in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Hudson worked for Cummins Bridgeway, LLC in New Hudson, Mich., from 2003 to 2014, when it was acquired by Columbus-based  Cummins, Inc. Hudson oversaw a profit-sharing entity of the two companies.

According to a  news release from the Eastern District, Hudson wrote over $4.8 million in checks to himself between 2008 and 2017. He used the funds to purchase a Cadillac, designer clothes, watches, cigars and rare wines.

In addition to his sentence, Hudson has been ordered to pay back the full amount.

"This was an unfortunate incident for Cummins, but we are very pleased with the ruling. Integrity is core value of our company and we are committed to upholding it. We appreciate the efforts of the employees who helped us uncover this case of fraud and the ongoing efforts of all our employees to uphold our values and prevent other such incidents from occurring," a Cummins spokesperson wrote in a statement.
