Scattered flurries swept their way through central Indiana late Thursday with half an inch of snow observed early Friday morning in Bloomington. The snow showers are expected to end by the late afternoon, with up to half an inch possible. This weekend will remain dry Saturday through Monday with sunny to partly cloudy skies.
Temperatures have decreased slightly throughout the region due to a cold front that passed through early Friday. Highs in the upper 20s on Friday and Saturday will increase through the week, as the anticipated sunshine tied with a surface high will allow for warming of the air mass. Sunday will see temperatures just above freezing, increasing into the lower 40s on Monday before peaking in the unseasonably high upper 40s on Tuesday.
Lows on Friday night in the upper single digits will rise into the low 20s through the weekend before hovering near freezing Tuesday through Thursday. In the long-range forecast, several elements are present for a potential mid-winter snowstorm between Tuesday and Thursday next week as a low-pressure system migrates into the central U.S. and heads east.
It’s too soon to predict exact timing and temperatures. This will significantly determine precipitation type and time. Based on temperature forecasts, precipitation may fall as mixed snow and rain. Current readings hint at between 1-2 inches of liquid precipitation. Should this system drop mostly rain rather than snow, localized flooding may be possible.
