Bloomington parks board extends security guard contract to farmers’ market

The city cited concern for public safety as the reason for the suspension.
The city cited concern for public safety as the reason for the suspension.

The Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners Tuesday approved a contract addendum to provide two private security officers at the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market.

The board originally contracted Marshall Security and Investigations in June 2021 to provide overnight security in Switchyard Park, before expanding the contract to other city parks one month later. The board also voted in January to extend the contract through the end of the year.

The addition costs $8,050, which increases the total value of the contract to $286,871. The farmers’ market security guards will make $23 per hour and work every Saturday from April through November.

“In the past, the Bloomington Community Farmers Market has had uniformed Bloomington Police Department officers as support,” parks department community events manager Leslie Brinson said. “With limitations for BPD, we are moving to this where Marshall Security would like to fill the gap.”

Additionally, the board approved a contract addendum with the company constructing the Griffy Lake accessible fishing pier and loop trail. The board originally contracted E&B Paving in October 2021, but an additional $38,940 will fund the entire repaving of Headley Road once the project is complete.

“We originally were planning on just one lane, but as the project has progressed, it has become apparent that we need to do both lanes of the road,” said Tim Street, operations and development director for the parks and recreation department.
