New Hope for Families is preparing to unveil its new campus at 1140 S. Morton Street in the coming weeks. The organization announced plans to build the $5.75 million emergency shelter expansion last April.

“This is a project that's been several years in the making,” said Emily Pike, executive director of New Hope. “Dozens of people have been involved firsthand, and hundreds have pledged their support for this project.”

The expansion includes two buildings that will replace the current shelter on West Second Street. The first is an emergency shelter with enough room to house 12 families, which is an increase from the current capacity of seven families. However, Pike said the organization tends to help additional families by placing them in motel rooms.

“We’re really committed to making sure that no family with children in our community ever has to sleep outside, live in a car, or be separated from one another in order to receive vital services,” Pike said.

The second building is an early childhood care and education center. This building will be able to accommodate 48 children, compared to the current capacity of 16 children.

New Hope is the only family shelter in Monroe County.
