$16 million for IUPUI's nursing program will aid in growing enrollment

A $16 million grant was made in early May to the Indiana University School of Nursing at IUPUI. This is the first allocation of IU's Health's $416 million gift to IU in December 2021.

Indiana has faced a nursing shortage and IU has dealt with a shortage of nursing faculty, due to the pandemic. The grant will be used to grow enrollments in the School of Nursing in Indianapolis over the next three years, said Dean of IU's School of Nursing Robin Newhouse.

“We were also planning for expanding our infrastructure related to simulation and labs,” Newhouse said. “It is not only human capital that we need, we also need the infrastructure to support the nurses as they come into the program.”

Beginning this fall, new faculty and staff will be hired and enrollment for 2023 will begin. The funding will also help first-year students who serve as technicians or certified nursing assistants.

“When you think about some of the biggest issues in our community,” Newhouse said, “actually nurses work across the spectrum of settings, across the spectrum of people, and really are a central source of a kind of clinician that can improve health and the public health of our community. So there's much work to be done.”

IU's School of Nursing is ranked among the top 35 nursing schools in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report
