Indiana University trustees have approved a budget for the 2023 fiscal year that includes an average pay increase of 3 and a half percent for employees.
The new $4 billion budget allocates funds for campus maintenance through its annual Repair and Rehabilitation plan. IU’s Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative will receive $5.3 million in funding for its first year. In addition, six new online degrees were announced.
In a news release, the trustees announced $70 million in budget cuts and reallocations aimed at enabling what they called “administrative efficiencies and realignments,” including the elimination of “non-value-added activities.” These unspecified cuts were announced as part of an overall plan to compensate for increased operating costs.
The trustees’ agenda included no mention of the graduate worker union, which received unanimous support of the Bloomington City Council and majority support from voting faculty.

A letter signed by more than 280 faculty one day before the budget meeting warned trustees that without serious negotiations, the graduate worker strike would likely resume in the fall.
