July Fourth brings high food costs for gatherings

Indiana shoppers could spend 13 percent more on food items such as burgers, chicken, potato salad, and strawberries for Fourth of July weekend, according to a press release by the Indiana Farm Bureau.

Still, Hoosiers are projected to spend nearly 8 percent less than the national average. Consumers can expect to pay on average $6.50 per person for groups of 10. The report indicates increases are caused by inflation and supply chain issues.

Farm Bureau 2nd Vice President Isabella Chism says that these predictions are based on prices at the beginning of June. She expects that some of those prices could come down because of holiday sales.

“Look for what the different grocery stores are offering, they will compete with each other,” Chism said.

She recommends that families should buy in bulk if they are feeding lots of people.

Despite supply chain issues, Chism says that families can still rely on safe and regularly accessible food.
