State Police patrol for distracted drivers July Fourth weekend

The Indiana State Police will be out with extra patrols July Fourth weekend like most other law enforcement agencies. But aside from aggressive or drunk driving, they’ll also be looking for distracted driving or drivers holding their cell phones.

It’s been exactly two years since ‘Hand-Free Indiana’ was enacted. This makes driving while holding your cell phone a moving violation.

Sergeant Todd Ringle with the ISP says there are distracted driving crashes every day.

“We're still stopping people that are holding their phone, and they're talking through their speaker," said Ringle. "You can talk through your speaker on your cell phone, but you cannot be holding your phone. You can mount it on a bracket, or you can have it on your console.”

Ringle said there were 1500 crashes last Fourth of July across the state, with 400 injuries.

He said there will be 150 extra troopers also looking for drunk and aggressive driving, as well as speeding.
