Brookville Police raise funds for K-9 with 'Tase the Chief' event

The Brookville Police Department’s K-9 Donation Fund received a jolt of cash over the weekend after it announced an upcoming “Tase the Chief” event.

“I'm looking forward to it,” Brookville Police Chief Terry Mitchum said. “It’s not fun.”

Mitchum said his department has been raising funds for a new K-9 unit since its last police dog, Fanto, died.

Some officers had been discussing ways to raise extra funds for a new dog and asked if Mitchum would be willing to get tased with the department’s new Tasers since he missed the initial training.

They set a goal of $4,000 and announced the “Tase the Chief” event last Wednesday. Donations came rolling in quick as a flash; the department had collected $4,005 by Saturday.

Mitchum said the event might generate buzz, but its purpose is dual: to raise money for a new dog and educate people on what goes into officer training.

“This is firsthand [for] the public to actually see what officers go through with that Taser,” Mitchum said. “And if we can raise money in the process, that’ll be great.”

The “Tase the Chief” event will take place during the department’s second annual golf outing Oct. 8. The department says any additional donations will go toward the K-9 Donation Fund.
