A houseboat sank Saturday afternoon on Lake Monroe, a Department of Natural Resources official confirmed Sunday.
Half of the 40-foot boat is underwater, while 10 feet of its slanted body remains above the surface, near Allen’s Creek.
Indiana Conservation Officer Lt. Angela Goldman said the DNR received a 911 call from the Harbor Master houseboat owner around 3 p.m. Saturday. The owner was traveling toward the Fourwinds Lakeside Inn & Marina and reported that the boat was taking on water.
DNR staff rescued the two occupants aboard the boat, who suffered no injuries. The cause of the damage is still unknown, Goldman said.
Goldman said the boaters had life jackets onboard and managed to put them on in time.
“This is a perfect example of – you just never know what can happen,” she said. “And when you’re out on the water, it’s just paramount that you have your safety plans in place. And these folks did.”
The department and the owner placed safety buoys around the boat Saturday night.
Goldman said the department would likely remove the boat from the water later this week.
