IU point guard pleads guilty to reckless driving

IU basketball point guard Xavier Johnson pleaded guilty today to reckless driving charges. Johnson was arrested on April 3 on charges of driving recklessly and resisting arrest following a high-speed chase with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle Moulden, Johnson was driving a 2019 Dodge Charger 90 mph in a 40 mph zone and ran several stop signs as police pursued. Also in the vehicle were IU starting guard Parker Stewart and another student.

Johnson initially denied driving the vehicle, which is registered to his family. Moulden said he saw Johnson get out of the driver’s seat, and the car keys were in his pocket when he was arrested.

The charge of resisting law enforcement was dropped. Johnson received a 60-day suspended sentence, 360 days probation and a mandatory 50 hours of community service.

Johnson is expected to remain on the IU basketball team. He led the team in assists and steals last year and finished second in average points per game.
