The public will get a unique opportunity to spend a day on the Monroe County Airport runway, which is currently closed for a $3 million LED lighting upgrade.

Runway Day is this Saturday. The day starts at 8 a.m. with a 5k race/walk.

“It’s a very rare and unique opportunity for something like this,” airport director Carlos Laverty said.

He said about 70 people had signed up for the race/walk as of Tuesday.

“It’ll be a really fast 5k,” Laverty said. “You don’t get much flatter than a runway.”

The day will resume at 2 p.m. with live music, food trucks, aircraft displays and a car cruise-in. Tethered hot air balloon rides will be available at 6 p.m. The day will end with a screening of the 2019 version of “Midway” at 8 p.m.

Runway Day will be the airport’s first public event since the pandemic.

“The hope is that we can have some sort of annual event or event multiple events at the airport,” Laverty said. “It’s a big space – people like being there and we like having people out there.”
