IU enrollment a record

IU Bloomington has 9,736 new degree-seeking undergraduate students, including first-semester freshmen and transfers. According to a university press release, that’s a record for campus.

Enrollment has risen quickly since Fall 2020, when the number of new students fell to 7,926. The pandemic hurt admissions for most schools, even those like IU that returned to in-person classes.

In terms of diversity, 2022 admits look similar to previous years. Among the incoming cohort, 28 percent identified as students of color, about equal to the proportion university-wide. Around 9.5% of this year’s class are first-generation students.

Almost three quarters of students are receiving some form of financial aid. Merit based scholarships were up 16% to 5,200 students. However, fewer were awarded federal Pell Grants for students in exceptional need - 1,523 compared to last year’s 1,713.
