IU Bloomington has been recognized by the INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for their efforts in increasing diversity and inclusion.

By awarding IU with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award, the publication honors the institution for its commitment to prioritizing diversity across campus.

Vice President James Wimbush is proud of the diversity work being done on campus. It is affirming to be nationally recognized, he said.

“Regardless of what you look like, what you believe in, what your identity is, we want you to be able to come to IU to be in a welcoming environment that allows you to thrive.” he said.

The award has been given to higher institutions for 11 years. Wimbush said IU Bloomington has received the award each of the eight years it has applied for it.

Several new programs aided in IU’s award achievement. Wimbush attributed partial success to the Jewish Cultural Center and the Jane Jorgensen Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Internship.

The Jane Jorgensen DEI Internship enables underrepresented IU students to gain leadership skills pertaining to diversity, inclusion and anti-racist principles.

IU senior Bukola Fasipe participated in the internship last semester. It gave her the opportunity to help others.

“I wanted people, like students of minority groups, to feel like they weren’t voiceless”, she said.  “I feel like I did get to make change.”
