State to distribute COVID-19 vaccines, flu shots Thursday and Friday

The Indiana Department of Health will host a COVID vaccine clinic at 800 N. Indiana Ave., Thursday and Friday.
The Indiana Department of Health will host a COVID vaccine clinic at 800 N. Indiana Ave., Thursday and Friday.

The Indiana Department of Health will give free COVID-19 vaccines, boosters and flu shots tomorrow and Friday at a temporary clinic at 800 North Indiana Avenue.

The clinic will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and no appointment is necessary.

Both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and boosters will be available, however, the new bivalent booster will be given only to those 12 years old and up. To find a bivalent booster vaccine site for kids 5 to 11, call 211 or visit the state’s COVID dashboard.

Officials recommend the new booster if it’s been five or six months since your last booster or COVID infection. They ask you to bring your COVID vaccination card and a photo ID.

There also will be a clinic offering the same services at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church on October 31st from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and November 1st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The state is offering the clinics because state vaccination rates remain low as fall weather – and flu season – settles in.

About  55 percent of the state has completed the primary series of vaccines-- the original two-dose or single-dose shots.  In contrast, only about 350-thousand Hoosiers have received the most recent recommended booster from the CDC and are considered up-to-date.

The state is reporting 539 cases of COVID-19, with 402 Hoosiers hospitalized with the virus.
