Bloomington’s Kirkwood Avenue reopened to cars today after being closed to all but pedestrian traffic since March. The city closed three blocks of Kirkwood for periods over the last two years but is not saying whether the closure will resume next spring.
Originally intended to increase outdoor dining spaces during the pandemic, Kirkwood street closures now aim to “activate” downtown, according to economic and sustainable development director Alex Crowley.
City director of community engagement Mary Catherine Carmichael said the decision of whether to close the street to traffic next year will depend on conversations with Kirkwood business owners and surveys of the Bloomington community.
