A gas leak near the intersection of 7th Street and Rose caused by fiber optic installation

A gas leak near the intersection 7th Street and Rose Avenue left residents without gas and electricity for more than two hours Thursday night.

IU Notify sent out its first alert at 6:31 p.m. about the leak on the north sidewalk. Three more alerts were sent out, the final one at 8:52 p.m.

IUPD Deputy Chief Shannon Bunger said that the leak was caused by a company drilling into the ground while installing fiber optics. IUPD secured the area and confirmed that there was no danger to buildings nearby.

Gas and electric service to the area was shut off until repairs were complete around 8:50 p.m.
