Peter Iverson retains County Council seat

Peter Iversen has retained the Monroe County Council district 1 seat. The Democrat took 58.3% of the vote over Republican challenger Jim Allen’s 41.7% of the vote.

One of Iversen’s goals for his next term is helping the county create a climate action plan. For example, he sees the county investing in more solar.

“And, as we know, electric vehicle usage is only going to be increasing," he said. "So we're working with the commissioners right now to increase the electric vehicle charging stations, as well as retrofitting our fleets to retire some of those gas guzzling vehicles that we use in county government and replacing them with electric vehicles."

He also aims to support continued public health funding, and invest in greater equity and inclusion in county government staff.

“We know from US census data that we're becoming a more multicultural democracy," he said. "We want to make sure that Monroe County government is keeping up with the way our community is changing.”

The county council is the fiscal arm of county government, overseeing expenditures, tax rates and the county budget.
