Theta Chi placed on cease-and-desist list

Theta Chi fraternity has been placed on cease-and-desist for hazing.

The organization is banned from organizing or participating in activities until further notice.

Chuck Carney, IU spokesperson, said that an investigation is ongoing, in cooperation with the fraternity’s national headquarters.

The IU Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, & Conduct classifies hazing as “any conduct that subjects another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger, abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of association with a group or organization, regardless of the person’s consent or lack of consent.”

IU Interfraternity Council President Ethan Golde issued a statement: "As an IFC we hold our members to the highest possible standard and this includes making sure that all of our brothers feel safe, secure, and supported on campus. Theta Chi has been placed on a temporary investigatory status and their chapter leadership has already committed to collaborating with the IFC and the Office of Student Conduct to ensure that an appropriate action plan can be developed and implemented as soon as possible."

Theta Chi is the latest Greek society placed on cease-and-desist this fall, following Sigma Alpha Mu. In addition, Pi Kappa Alpha, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon were placed on disciplinary status earlier this semester.

Theta Chi headquarters did not respond to a request for comment in time for this story.
