IU quarterback Williams to have surgery after dislocating knee against Purdue

Indiana quarterback Dexter Williams suffered a “knee dislocation with significant structural damage” in the Hoosiers’ season-ending loss to Purdue, according to an IU announcement on social media Tuesday.

Williams will undergo surgery next week. The announcement did not give a time table for his return, saying only that the redshirt sophomore would be further evaluated at that time.

It’s the second major knee injury for Williams, who had claimed the starting quarterback job with two games left in the season. He tore an ACL before last season and missed the 2021 campaign.

In four games this year, Williams completed 13 of 38 passes for 184 yards with two interceptions. He also rushed 40 times for 165 yards and a touchdown.

Williams’ injury, coupled with IU quarterbacks Connor Bazelak, Jack Tuttle and Grant Gremel all entering the transfer portal, leaves the Hoosiers short at the position. Freshman Brendan Sorsby is the only quarterback on the roster, with Broc Lowry committed to join the team in 2023.
