Carl ‘Brett’ Heinisch, a Bloomington resident, has announced he’s running for City Council in the city’s third district.

Heinisch is running as a Republican, making him the only one so far of this year’s city council candidates. All of Bloomington’s current city council members are Democrats.

Heinisch said he’s running for office because he wants to provide voters with an alternative ballot option and serve the community.

“My main issue is to be a voice for my constituents in office,” Heinisch said.

Heinisch has interned for current U.S. Senator Todd Young, former U.S. Rep. Luke Messer and current U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Heinisch was also a delegate to the 2016 and 2022 Republican state conventions, he said.

Heinisch studied political science as an undergraduate at Indiana University Bloomington and later received his master’s degree in public affairs from IU’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Indianapolis.

He works for self-storage company Storage Express, now a part of Extra Space Storage. Before that, he worked at Bell Trace Senior Living Community.

Also running for the District 3 seat are incumbent Ron Smith (D), IU student Conner Wright (D) and Bloomington resident Hopi Stosberg (D).
