Monroe sheriff investigates a.m. shooting south of town

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an early morning shooting Monday south of Bloomington that left one man hospitalized with two non-life threatening injuries.

According to a news release, officials responded to a call at 4:05 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Walnut Street near Smithville from the man who had been shot. The man told the dispatcher he saw two individuals tampering with his pickup truck in his driveway, and when he opened his back door to confront them was shot.

The victim was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Sheriff’s officials used a drone to search the surrounding area and located “a subject that appeared to be trespassing and concealing himself behind multiple properties in the 7600 Block of South Fairfax Road.” Deputies, including the K9 unit, apprehended the subject, who was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was preliminarily charged with drug possession and resisting law enforcement charges, according to the report.

The second subject remains at large, but the sheriff’s office said “there is no credible threat to public safety as this appears to be an isolated and targeted incident by subjects known to the victim.”
