Cummins, Inc. launched a program at Arsenal Tech High School on Indianapolis’s near east side to train students on diesel engines.
The Technical Education for Communities (TEC) program targets the gap in technical skills by offering underserved students hands-on work experience they can bring to the workforce.
The goal is to get more Black students into high-need, high-paying jobs.
Jason Irvin is the Global Director of the TEC program.
“Indianapolis is one of the largest cities in need of diesel engine technicians,” Irvin said. “It's really a good fit and [Arsenal Tech] is one of the schools that could use the lift in this area. Our program really fits the bill for that.”
Cummins’ TEC program is a 12-year-old, global initiative. This is the first location in Indiana.
Local businesses, including Allison Transmission, donated equipment and tools. The program also includes teacher training and virtual classes to add to existing curriculum.
