Nashville Town Council withdraws noise ordinance

Nashville Town Council has withdrawn a  proposed noise ordinance, canceling the public hearing set for next week.

Town Manager Sandie Jones said officials instead will reinforce the  current noise ordinance, in effect since 2012.

The withdrawn proposal introduced more restrictive sound limitations for business zones. Some residents were disappointed in the new proposal, as downtown Nashville is known for its lively spirit.

“Music is really a cornerstone of this community,” said resident Rosemary McQueary. “And the ordinance was very restrictive, but also very vague.”

Although the proposal will not advance, McQueary said she and other residents still do not see the withdrawal as a win.

“They're going to go back to an ordinance from 2012 that also does not define a volume or a decibel level,” McQueary said. “So, while the new one and the need for permits is gone, it's still pretty unenforceable.”
