IU President Pamela Whitten will be commencement speaker for this spring’s graduate and undergraduate ceremonies.

This is the first time an IU President has done so since 2006, when Adam Herbert presided. The last time an IU president spoke at commencement before Herbert was in 1932.

University spokesperson Amanda Roach told WFIU that “much like in 2021, when the Provost provided the charge to the graduating class, President Whitten will fill that role during the 2023 commencement ceremony.”

This year's graduate commencement will take place May 5 at 4 p.m. at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and the undergraduate ceremony will take place May 6 at 10 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.
