In a statement, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources identified the shooter as Shawn Hooper, 54, from Fishers. He was hunting turkeys.
Jeffery McClintic, 31, of Indianapolis, and Scott Poynter, 34, of Danville, received non-life-threatening injuries after the shooter misidentified them and fired in their direction, it said.
“The incident is currently under investigation,” the statement said.
“Indiana Conservation Officers remind hunters to always identify the target and what is in front and behind it before shooting while in the field.”
Last year, the department announced it was suspending a man’s hunting license for life for the first time in state history.
The man was charged with hunting wild turkeys illegally.
