A banner raised in front of Bloomington Hospital this morning called out IU Health for its one percent pay raise for workers.
The sign, which has since been taken down, read “one percent raises are a joke, but we’re not laughing. IU Health workers deserve better.”
The creator of the sign remains anonymous, but some employees said it expresses conversations that have been ongoing for several years.

Jessica Christie is an outpatient clinical dietician for IU Health in Bloomington. She said things at work got harder during the pandemic but doesn’t feel that leadership has acknowledged that.
“There’s kind of this almost toxic positivity about how everything’s fine and we’re investing in the future," Christine said. "Money’s being spent somewhere, but not necessarily to retain employees.”
IU Health responded to WFIU’s request for comment, saying “IU Health very much cares for and values all team members. We invest in our team in a variety of ways including providing an annual wage increase. In addition, we provide a portfolio of other compensation and benefits and celebrate our team with a number of recognition programs and events.”
